A Deeper Look at Lynn's Public School District Enrollment

The most recent DESE enrollment report indicates that the Lynn Public School District's student population has increased nearly 6% over the past five years. Currently, the Lynn Schools with the largest student populations are Lynn English (1,786), Lynn Classical (1,716) and Breed Middle School (1,429); Fallon (47) and Lynn Woods (177) are the smallest schools in the district.

In terms of grade breakdowns, nearly half of the student population is in grades Pre-K through K, 22% in the middle school grades, and 22% in the high school grades.

The kindergarten grade level has seen a decrease in its population since it hit 1,222 in the 2014-2015 school year.

Within the kindergarten population, however, there is a higher proportion of English Language Learners and Economically Disadvantaged students at the kindergarten level when compared to the district. Further, at the individual school level, the kindergarten English Language Learner population varies; 62.8% of kindergarten students at Cobbet Elementary School, for example, are English Language Learners.

Finally, in looking at the historical data, Lynn's student population has changed drastically in the last 25 years. Below is a comparison the district's enrollment by race/ethnicity in 1993-1994 and 2018-2019.

While the African American/Black and Asian student populations have seen more subtle shifts, the changes in the Hispanic/Latino and White student populations are much more substantial. In 1993-1994, LPS's enrollment was 12,701 with just 8.8% of the population identified as English language Learners compared to 15,751 (25% ELL) this school year.
