CHESTNUT STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Chestnut Street Middle School in Springfield, which serves approximately 1,020 students in grades 6 through 8, was named to the state's Level 4 school list in January 2010. Chestnut Street's student population is just over three quarters Hispanic/Latino; the low income population has ranged from 78.6 to 90.5% since 2004-05 while the Limited English proficiency population has ranged from approximately 21 - 26%. In 2011-12, 40.5% of students spoke English as a second language and 25.4% were special education students (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).

In 2008-09 students missed an average of 17 days of school and the attendance rate was 89.8%.
Since being designated a Level 4 school, proficiency rates on the MCAS exams at Chestnut Street improved in ELA and math from 2009 to 2010 but have since declined in both areas. Below are the percentage of students who were proficient or better on each section of the exam from 2009 - 2012.

- The percentage of students receiving a 'Warning/Failing' grade in math was 60% in 2012, with no change from the previous year,
- The percentage of students with an 'Advanced' score in math, on the other hand, increased 1 percent from 5% to 6% from 2011 to 2012.
- Just over half of the African American/Black student population (54%) was proficient or better in ELA
- 26% of Non-Low Income students were proficient or better in science compared to 6% of Low Income students
- Chestnut Street failed to meet any of its CPPI targets at either the subgroup and aggregate levels in 2012.
In regard to the CPI, which is a score given to assess a subgroup, school or district's progress toward 100% proficiency, Chestnut Street had an overall score of 64.7 in ELA and 47.6 in math; scores range from 0 - 100 with 100 denoting that all students are proficient.
The average number of absences and attendance rate at Chestnut Street have improved generally the same over the last few years. The retention rate is up 3.2 percentage points in 2011-12 from the previous year while out of school suspensions are up 8%.

The John F Kennedy Middle School, which serves approximately 670 students in grades 6 through 8, was also named to the state's Level 4 school list in January 2010. JFK's student population is about 63%% Hispanic/Latino; the low income population has ranged from approximately 88 to 95% since 2007-08 while the Limited English proficiency population has ranged from approximately 8 - 19%. In 2011-12, 27.2% of students spoke English as a second language and 21.9% were special education students (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).
In regard to the CPI, which is a score given to assess a subgroup, school or district's progress toward 100% proficiency, South Lawrence East had an overall score of 61.6 in ELA and 42.5 in math; scores range from 0 - 100 with 100 denoting that all students are proficient.

M MARCUS KILEY MIDDLE SCHOOL
The M Marcus Kiley Middle School, which serves approximately 700 students in grades 6 through 8, was named to the state's Level 4 school list in January 2010 along with Chestnut Street and JFK. Kiley's student population is a little over half Hispanic/Latino; the low income population has ranged from 82.5 to 90.8% since 2007-08 while the Limited English proficiency population has ranged from approximately 12.7 - 18.4%. In 2011-12, 24.1% of students spoke English as a second language and 21.8% were special education students (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).
In 2012, the percentage of students in math receiving a 'Warning/Failing' grade decreased 7 percentage points from 2011 while the percentage of students failing ELA decreased 5 percentage points. Further:
